Local churches collecting used mobility aides

Central Presbyterian Church, Tarentum, and Bethel United Methodist Church in Lower Burrell are collecting canes, crutches, walkers, shower chairs and manual wheelchairs to be donated to Global Links, a charity that works to redirect still-useful materials away from landfills to support public health programs in targeted communities throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Central Church is acting as a collection point for the collection. Clean items can be dropped off through Aug. 31 at Central Church, 305 Allegheny St. For details, call the church at 724-224-9220 or visit Central Presbyterian Church on Facebook.

Highlands HS band slates pie night fundraiser

The Highlands High School Marching Band will host its annual pie night and show preview fundraiser at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Highlands Golden Rams Stadium, Harrison.

Admission is $5 and includes a slice of pie, beverage and admission to the performance. Rain date is Wednesday.

Kiski River Float open to veterans

Vandergrift Veterans of Foreign Wars is sponsoring the Kiski River Vet Float Aug. 13 on the Kiski River.

Veterans and their family and friends to accompany them should meet at the Roaring Run boat launch in Apollo. Kayaks, canoes and tubes will be available to rent from River’s Edge Canoe and Kayak. Launch time will be 9 a.m. and finish at River’s Edge Canoe. Entry fee is $10 and a prize will be awarded for the most patriotic decorated float. Proceeds will benefit the Mechling Shakely Veterans Center.

Mutts, Meows and Margaritas event to benefit HOPE Center

The Alle-Kiski Area HOPE Center will host its sixth annual Mutts, Meows and Margaritas event from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Harrison Veterans of Foreign Wars pavilion, 894 Veterans Drive.

There will be activities for the dogs, a buffet, raffle, door prizes, vendors, music and margaritas. Feline lovers should email a photo of their cat in advance to [email protected] so a special lanyard can be prepared to be worn at the event. Tickets are $25 each; or $35 per couple. Reservations made by Aug. 25 will be entered into a special drawing. Vendor spaces are available.

East Vandergrift

Aug. 12: Community Library of Allegheny Valley will offer a free workshop about making pickles and jam in an Instant Pot from 10 a.m. to noon at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd. Bring a cutting board and a kitchen knife. Indiana Township

Sunday: The Allegheny County Summer Concert Series at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater will feature alternative rock with Soccer Mommy and Disq at 7:30 p.m. Food trucks will open at 6 p.m. Rain or shine. A $20 per vehicle fee will benefit the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.

Leechburg

Monday: Leechburg Volunteer Fire Company will host bingo at 7 p.m. at the firehall, 268 Canal St. Doors open at 5 p.m. The kitchen will be open.

Lower Burrell
